Climate & Energy Connections in My Community Course

This is the channel for the one-credit UAF course (NRM/ED 595) titled, "Climate and Energy Connections in My Community." Course Description: This course is for educators and youth group leaders. Climate change and energy use influence our lives. Educators from Alaska and other states will learn about climate change and energy use and be given tools to work with youth in K-12 classrooms or in after-school classes/sessions, as part of STEM teaching and learning, as well as collaborate with UAF and NASA scientists and Renewable Energy Alaska Project (REAP) and Arctic and Earth STEM Integrating GLOBE and NASA (SIGNs) educators. Participant educators will learn about the following: climate change; energy conservation, efficiency, and renewable alternatives; heliophysics; climate observations; energy strategies in Native communities; how to assess personal and classroom energy use with REAP curricula, and make temperature and cloud observations via the Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) citizen science protocols. Participants and youth they work with will also be engaged in REAP and the Arctic and Earth SIGNs project. Best teaching practices will be modeled in the course including culturally responsive teaching, inquiry, and place-based learning.
