Timing is important when it comes to supporting student engagement. Research (and common sense) have shown that early and mid-semester outreach to students who show signs that they could potentially fail the class have a high chance of successfully getting that student back on track.
In order to do that early intervention, an instructor has to be both proactive and well-informed. At UAF, faculty are strongly encouraged to submit midterm grades 4-6 weeks into the semester. Initiatives like Nanook Navigator have been working to help struggling students by coordinating a team of people who can help with outreach and support in a way that can address barriers more holistically than an individual instructor could do alone.
But that early intervention starts with instructors - because they are the ones who notice that decrease in academic engagement. This video will cover tools within Canvas Grades and New Analytics that allow you to monitor student engagement, and give some ideas on how to apply that data to your outreach strategy.
